Our History

Gay Soccer... Of Course!

This was an early 2000s campaign to promote the existence of LGBTQ+ people in the world of soccer by celebrating the few out players at the time and their allies.

  • Milwaukee Gay Soccer Association was founded in 2010.

  • At it's peak, then Milwaukee Gay Soccer Association (MGSA) was composed of 125 lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and straight ally soccer enthusiasts and had around a dozen teams.

  • In 2012 MGSA shrunk to it’s smallest since its founding. With only one remaining team actively competing through Uihlein Soccer Park’s adult leagues. That team, was Blue Light Special.

  • In the summer of 2013, the captain of Blue Light Special made the tough decision to step down to move out of state of school.

Patrick and Cindy, two former players, took on the responsibility and leadership of Blue Light Special and Milwaukee Gay Soccer Association (MGSA).

  • Blue Light Special would continue to compete at Uihlein Soccer Park playing indoor and outdoor in their adult leagues, until cost and low attendance required MGSA to find a new home.

In 2016, MGSA join Milwaukee Rec where they began to rebuild their team.

  • In 2018, with some new momentum and a newly elected board, the decision was made to retire the name Milwaukee Gay Soccer Association and rebrand as Milwaukee Gay Football Club.

  • In 2024, MGFC (formerly MGSA) celebrated 14 years since it’s founding.

2024 has been a big year, with a full board elected we have been able to grow almost exponentially. Monday Night Social Pick-up found a new home at ZaoMKE Church and has reached capacity most nights.

MGFC also launched its own independent gender-inclusive league starting with Futsal in March and moving to outdoor Soccer in the Summer.
